James and Louise Temerty made history today with their groundbreaking $250-million gift supporting the new #TemertyFacultyofMedicine at University of Toronto. It is the single largest gift made in Canadian philanthropic history.
The Temerty’s gift focuses on three core themes: groundbreaking discovery, a collaborative ecosystem, and excellence through equity.
Some key investments include establishing the Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine, which focuses on artificial intelligence and machine learning’s applications to healthcare. They have pledged to enhance innovation through collaborative relationships between hospital networks, accelerating research, and fostering entrepreneurship activity. Additionally, they are committed to improving access to medical education for Indigenous and other under-represented groups.
Finally, the gift has allocated $10-million towards a COVID-19 Priority Fund at the university which supports front-line workers, trainees, and researchers dedicated to treating and preventing COVID-19.
We would like to extend our gratitude towards the Temerty Family for their outstanding leadership and commitment in improving the lives of Canadians.
